Keeping yourself motivated is a very difficult task especially when we are faced with a barrage of distractions that can occur on a daily basis

Motivation refers to the desire to do things. It’s the difference between getting up early in the morning to work out, and lying in and lazing about for the day. Motivation is necessary in setting, working toward and achieving goals.

Being self-motivated means we rely on ourselves, not others, to encourage us to make changes and meet goals. The effort self-motivated people put into making a change, comes entirely from within.

There are three parts to motivation: these are called activation, persistence, and intensity.

Activation is the decision to make a change – For example to stop smoking.

Persistence is the effort made in achieving the goal even when faced with challenges such as stressful situations, being around other people that smoke and relating habits to smoking.

Intensity is the energy and focus that someone uses to work on achieving a goal. For example, someone may by use stop-smoking aids only, whereas someone else may use classes, support groups and diary entries along with stop smoking aids in an attempt to achieve their goal.
